Startup funding data 2024: Barcinno insights 📊

Welcome back to a bumper issue! Let’s get into the analysis of all the Barcelona and Spanish startup funding we tracked in 2024. First, a Barcelona snapshot:

Total funding by BCN startups: Over €1.9B + 9 undisclosed
Peak month: November; peak number of rounds: February (19)
5 biggest rounds: SeQura (largest of the year, countrywide), Nebeus, ID Finance, TravelPerk, Impress.

Sector highlights:

👑 Fintech is king in BCN (and Spain too), dominating the list with major deals including three from the top five above. Looks like there’s ever more investor confidence in financial technologies.

💪 Catalan world-changers: Strong investment in healthtech, biotech, and deeptech solutions, namely Biointaxis, Inbrain Neuroelectronics, and Integra Therapeutics.

🌎 Similarly, big investment in green, clean, and climatech startups like Pack2Earth and Submer (and Zunder, Clevergy, etc. from the rest of Spain) is a hopeful sign of more sustainability and impact focus in the country.

🛫 Traveltech: Though boosted by TravelPerk and Exoticca’s two massive rounds each (totaling €220M+ and €60M respectively), BCN travel innovators raised €294.2M of Spain’s total €395.8M investment in the industry.

🤖 Not surprisingly, both new and established AI startups received healthy funding at over €45M across Spain, including some cool crossovers like Catalan AI musictech Muse Scene Lab.

Final thoughts: Barcelona continues to conquer with a diverse mix of industries and appears to be maturing, with more late-stage funding and international visibility. Room for improvement? Increase diversity in underrepresented sectors like femtech and agritech.
