🧘 Founder mental health & well-being: Startup Snapshot report

In March we ran a survey, and your contributions directly helped with an insightful and ever-important research report: Startup Snapshot’s The Untold Toll: The Impact of Stress on the Well-Being of Founders.

Created by strategic VC & startup advisor Yael Benjamin, its mission is simple: To raise awareness about founder mental health as well as normalize and encourage the conversation surrounding it.

🔑 And the key, perhaps not-so-surprising insight? The startup grind takes a significant toll, with 72% of founders experiencing mental health issues (namely anxiety, depression, and stress).

  • Despite this, founders are stress junkies 🤪 – 83% are ‘enjoying the journey’ even though such a large number are experiencing the above.

  • Founders who had a mentor or support network reported better mental health and well-being than those who didn’t.

  • However, entrepreneurs mostly lean on family and friends, both of which can rarely relate to the unique challenges faced. Investors would relate more, but just 1 in 10 founders turns to them to talk about stress.

  • Founders who worked 80+ hours a week were more likely to report mental health issues than those who worked fewer, underscoring something we strongly champion: ⚖️ The need for a work-life balance and sufficient downtime to prevent burnout.

Overall, the results prove that it's crucial for founders to prioritize their own well-being and seek support when needed.

💭 So, if you’re a founder and the above resonates, perhaps take this as a nudge to build that support network and take steps to prevent burnout to help you thrive in the exciting – yet challenging – world of startups.

Have a great week! 😌

In the third installment of the Happiness ROI Programme, we're looking into managing your mindset. So many of you have already taken the wellbeing surveys and this week's results are in:

A whopping 46.3% of us see a new challenge as a problem and 14.29% of us admit to spiraling into our own thoughts. It’s clear that despite being able to push through what’s unfamiliar to us, we’re wasting energy to find the solution.

Only 15.63% of us refuse to blame ourselves when something negatively impacts us. A sobering 25% of us blame ourselves for what's not going right in our lives. These thought patterns destroy confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to progress toward our goals.

Alarmingly, 29.03% of us always blame ourselves when things go wrong, with just 12.9% of us recognising that everyone has to take responsibility for their own actions. This type of self-blame is rooted in ideas that we should be doing more.

I've developed a free toolkit with audios, videos, resources, and exercises to help you to explore and integrate sustainable habits into your daily routine:

Next week I’ll be featuring one of your stories and providing guidance to one of you looking to make changes towards being happier. Share your story now or feel free to contact me any time if you need further support or guidance on the Happiness ROI Programme.

With heart and integrity,
