Barcelona's Weekly Tech Update

Hello and happy first week of September (!),

This week’s main headlines:

  • 2 new BCN startups raise €200K seed rounds 💶

  • The gaming sector is booming in Catalonia 🕹

  • BBVA to increase tech workforce by 2000 📲

The results are in and apparently, there’s no better time to be a developer 🧑‍💻🏆

Barcelona developer recruitment platform Joppy just published their 2022 Tech Salaries & Ecosystem Report, and the BCN-specific findings were pretty interesting. The take home? 👉 Even with the downturn, companies are always looking for developers, and there are always developers looking for work. Software engineer Dmytro Khmelenko’s recent post reassures, “Folks employed in the IT sector should worry the least. There is enough work for everybody at least for a decade”.

Back to BCN, though, with these discoveries 🔎 from the report: Developer expectations haven’t changed much in the last few years, except for workers with +5 years of experience. And yet salaries have increased for all levels, including the "floor" (i.e. the lower end of what's typically paid). Totals have risen from around €60K to €80K 💰 in the last two years for frontend, backend, mobile, and full stack senior roles.

In Madrid, these same roles are only being offered around the €60K mark – which is pretty much exactly the same as in 2019. Plus, stats from a similar, global developer hiring platform indicate that BCN salaries are more attractive 💅 than other places in Western Europe, including Germany and Sweden.

Clearly, it’s a better time than ever to consider a tech dev career. And in Barcelona, the most-requested profiles by companies have remained to be backend developers from 2018-2022. As for the most-required code skills by companies in 2022, frontend Javascript has gone up a massive 79% since last year. Good stuff to know if you’re in the industry 😉

🙋‍♀️ And if you're non-tech, you can always sign up for a bootcamp with a school like Le Wagon, Microverse (fully remote 🌎), Barcelona Code School, or CodeOp (who offer courses for women, trans, and non-binary people).
